How home solar works
Daylight hits the panels
Panels turn sunlight into direct-current (DC) electricity — best in direct sun, but they still generate on cloudy days.
The inverter converts it
An inverter turns that DC into the alternating current (AC) your home runs on.
Your home uses it
Solar electricity you use as it’s made cuts what you buy from the grid — that’s where most of the saving comes from.
Spare can go to a battery…
A home battery stores spare solar to use later, so more of it is used in your home.
…or to the grid
The rest is exported. In Great Britain, suppliers must offer to pay for it under the Smart Export Guarantee.
What could solar save you?
Put in your roof, your electricity use and your prices. You see every figure and every step of the sum — bill saving, export income and simple payback — and can share the result.

Straight answers before you buy
Independent, and clear about what we know
EcoGlo is an independent guide and directory. Listings are free. We check what we can against public registers and scheme lists; installers’ own claims are shown as their claims.
MCS checked on the MCS installer searchMCS the installer says — not yet checked
Every listing comes from the installer’s own website and is dated. We then look up MCS certification on the MCS installer search, and consumer-code and electrical-scheme memberships on the schemes’ own lists. More about the data.
