Solar quotes checklist

Use it for each quote you get — ideally at least three. Tick as you go; your ticks are saved only on this device. Or print it and take it to the visit.

The installer

Is the company MCS certified for what it’s quoting (solar panels, battery)? Check its MCS number on the MCS installer search yourself.
Is it a member of a consumer code such as RECC or HIES? (No longer compulsory for MCS installers, but worth knowing.)
Does it give a full company name and address, and is the company active on Companies House?
Who will actually do the work, and what is its complaints procedure?

The system and the estimate

Does the quote give the system size in kWp, and the make and model of the panels, inverter and any battery?
Has the installer given you a written estimate of yearly generation and how much you’ll use yourself — before you sign?
Does the estimate say which MCS postcode zone, Kk figure and shade factor it used, and what it assumed about when you’re at home?
Have you seen the estimate with and without a battery?
Is scaffolding included? Who notifies or applies to the network operator (G98 or G99)?

Money

Does the quote show the total cost, including any paperwork charges, with prices with and without VAT?
Is the VAT rate correct? (0% for solar and batteries installed in homes until 31 March 2027.)
Is the deposit no more than 25%, and does the quote say how it’s protected?
When is the final payment due, and how long is the quote valid?
If finance is offered, have you compared the full cost with other ways to pay, such as a Warm Homes Loan?
Have you compared at least three written quotes?

Paperwork

Does the quote list every guarantee and warranty and how long it lasts, and any insurance-backed guarantee or other financial protection?
Is there a written contract covering who gets any permissions, your cancellation rights, complaints and dispute resolution, and after-sales service?
Will you get the MCS certificate, the electrical and building regulations certificates and the network operator’s acceptance letter? (Smart Export Guarantee suppliers ask for these.)
Have you checked whether you need planning permission or listed building consent?
Have you checked with your home insurer and, if your mortgage terms require it, your lender?

Red flags — don’t sign if…

The company cold-called you.
The salesperson stays more than two hours, quotes a high price then offers a discount, or offers a discount for signing today.
You’re offered a discount for testimonials or monitoring, prices are held back until the end, or you’re asked what other quotes you’ve had.
You’re told availability is limited, or the savings claims sound too good to be true.
The seller won’t show ID before coming into your home.

Before you sign: check the installer on the MCS installer search yourself, read the contract and warranties, and don’t feel rushed. Find installers near you · Estimate your savings
